Why Is the Game Boy Pocket So Much Cheaper in Japan?
Share
What Happened
While researching current market prices, I noticed a significant price gap between Japan and the United States for the Nintendo Game Boy Pocket.
Current market prices are approximately:
| Market | Typical Price |
|---|---|
| Japan | ¥5,500–¥5,800 ($35–37) |
| United States (eBay) | $75–80 |
In many cases, the same model sells for more than double the Japanese market price once it reaches the United States.
Why This Matters
Many overseas buyers assume Japanese retro gaming products are expensive because of collector demand.
However, some products remain surprisingly affordable inside Japan.
The Game Boy Pocket is one example.
Despite being nearly 30 years old, working units can still be found in Japan for under $40.
Meanwhile, similar units regularly sell for around $75–80 on eBay.
What I See in the Japanese Market
The Game Boy Pocket was released in 1996 as a smaller and lighter version of the original Game Boy.
Millions of units were sold worldwide, and many still remain in circulation in Japan.
Unlike products such as the Game Boy Advance SP, the Game Boy Pocket is not currently experiencing the same level of demand from modders or refurbishers.
As a result, Japanese prices have remained relatively stable.
However, overseas demand remains surprisingly strong despite the system being nearly 30 years old.

Based on current eBay sales activity, approximately 200–250 Game Boy Pocket systems are sold every month.
That level of demand is remarkable for a handheld console released almost three decades ago.
Jun's Opinion
One possibility that I find particularly interesting is the future of the Game Boy Pocket.
Today, the Game Boy Pocket remains relatively affordable in Japan.
At the same time, demand continues to exist overseas.
What I pay attention to is not the current price.
It is the supply.
Unlike modern products, no new Game Boy Pocket systems are being produced.
Every year, more units are lost to screen damage, battery corrosion, broken components, or simply being discarded.
As a result, the supply of clean, original-condition systems continues to shrink.
Demand does not need to increase dramatically for prices to change.
If demand remains stable while the number of available systems continues to decline, the market may eventually place a higher value on well-preserved Game Boy Pocket systems than it does today.
Of course, nobody can predict the future with certainty.
However, when I study the retro gaming market, I pay more attention to supply trends than price trends.
Many people watch prices.
Very few people watch supply.
Price tells you what happened.
Supply tells you what may happen next.
